SPH Media and Nikkei will collaborate on several strategic initiatives which cover editorial knowledge exchange, artificial intelligence (AI) technology applications and regional audience development.

Both parties have inked a memorandum of understanding, they said on Wednesday (Apr 12).

As part of the partnership, Nikkei and SPH Media will organise regular exchanges among editorial personnel beginning in the second half of 2023 to share best practices and discuss digital transformation, data analytics and editorial talent development.

SPH Media will also explore the use of AI technology on Nikkei’s scoutAsia product, which leverages Singapore-founded AI venture DC Frontiers as its technology partner.

In March 2023, SPH Media and DC Frontiers started a project exploring potential applications of advanced technologies to bolster the former’s digital news offerings. The project is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2023.

As for regional audience development, SPH Media and Nikkei will implement joint initiatives which utilise both their networks. This includes events, as well as marketing and sales cooperation.

Both parties have identified Asean audiences as an area of mutual interest.

SPH Media Group chief executive officer Teo Lay Lim said: “Since SPH Media’s restructuring in December 2021, we have been investing resources to digitally transform our news titles to provide a better user experience.”

Tsuyoshi Hasebe, Nikkei’s president and chief executive officer, noted that by partnering SPH Media, Nikkei hopes to draw on both companies’ AI technology utilisation and digitalisation expertise.
