FROM July, local telco StarHub will roll out a network upgrade which would allow for significantly higher mobile data throughput (download as well as upload) in congested areas. The telco said the speeds that customers will get would be among the "fastest in the world" for 4G networks.

StarHub will deploy this upgrade by installing equipment for what is known as 2.5 GHz (gigahertz) LTE TDD technology in the CBD (central business district) area, Orchard Road, Changi airport, Marina Bay and the transport hubs. Other parts of the country would be progressively covered. The telco will use the 2.5 GHz spectrum band that it bid for in the recent auction conducted by IMDA (Infocomm Media Development Authority) of Singapore. It will be eligible to start using this band from July 1.
