This was the likely thought in investors' minds after US President Donald Trump stepped up his recent offensive by suggesting that a US-China trade deal might not happen until after the US presidential elections in 2020.

The possibility of that sent Wall Street tumbling on Tuesday, with regional markets picking up on the slide on Wednesday.
