NORWEGIAN telco Telenor and Thai conglomerate Charoen Pokphand Group (CP Group) agreed on Monday (Nov 22) to merge their telco units in a deal that analysts say will help create a more competitive entity within the Thailand telecoms market.
If Telenor majority-owned Total Access Communication (Dtac) and CP Group's True Corporation are merged, the combined entity would become the largest telco in Thailand with over 50 per cent market share.
In comparison, current market leader and Singtel's Thai associate, Advanced Info Service (AIS), has 43.8 per cent market share and National Telecom's market share is less than 5 per cent at the end of 2020, according to GlobalData.
