MARKETING kicked off for the new Open Electricity Market (OEM) on Monday, and - apart from the households and businesses that are set to benefit from a choice of electricity provider - there could also be other, more unlikely beneficiaries.

These are the local telco players that have been hit hard by disruption and stiff competition and which are looking to see if the opening of the electricity market can offer them fresh revenue streams.

The pilot OEM will, from April 1, give 108,000 households and 9,500 businesses in Jurong the opportunity to buy electricity from a retailer of their choice, beyond the national SP Group.
