Thin trading signals tough week ahead
Sino-US trade dispute will keep markets on tenterhooks; STI inches up 1.48 points to finish at 3,219.16, touching a four-week high
THE thin trading on Monday - due partly to the annual Mid-Autumn Festival celebrated in many Asian countries - could point to a tough week ahead, with politics and trade tensions both expected to keep markets on tenterhooks.
The Sino-US trade dispute went up yet another notch as both nations imposed fresh tariffs on each other, with US tariffs on US$200 billion worth of Chinese goods and retaliatory Chinese tariffs on some US$60 billion worth of US products taking effect at around 12pm Singapore time on Monday.
The effect was slightly blunted as major Asian bourses like Tokyo, China and Seoul were shut for the day for the Mid-Autumn Festival, traditionally held during late September to early October.
