ABOUT 650 Volkswagen diesel vehicles in Singapore - both passenger and commercial models - are fitted with the Type EA 189 EU5 turbodiesel engine, the control software of which is rigged to pass emissions tests.
The German auto giant's EA 189 unit contains a so-called "defeat device", which enables the engine to suppress excessive pollution during laboratory testing, but belches up to 40 times the legal limit in emissions when the car is driven by its owner.
