LAST week, container shipping giant AP Moller-Maersk committed itself to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, a decade ahead of its initial 2050 ambition.
In doing so, it has made the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) initial greenhouse gas (GHG) strategy - which aims to reduce carbon intensity of international shipping by 40 per cent by 2030 compared to 2008 - appear obsolete.
The company said the new emissions targets are intended to align with the net-zero criteria of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) pathway to limit global warming to 1.5 deg C.
