BYD has created a new sub-brand, called Linghui, that will house some re-badged models popular with fleet operations and ride-hailing services.

A version of the popular electric Qin Plus will be re-badged as the Linghui e5, a derivative of the Xia DM-i multi-purpose van will be known as the M9, while a variant of the flagship Han electric sedan will be known as the Linghui e9, according to configurations and photos released by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology late Thursday (Jan 8).

Industry publications in China, including Yiche, suggested Linghui may serve as a repository for established BYD models that have been re-branded for fleet operations or ride-hailing services. BYD did not respond to a request for comment on the new sub-brand.

Having the established models into a separate brand may be part of BYD’s push to guard its ride-hailing market while protecting its burgeoning premium image. While BYD’s total sales rose 7.7 per cent last year, demand for some of its pricier models surged. Sales of its rugged hybrid Fangchengbao off-roaders, for instance, jumped more than 300 per cent to around 234,600 units.

Among other new models disclosed in the filings, Luxeed – a joint venture between Huawei Technologies and Chery Automobile – registered its first multi-purpose van. Mercedes-Benz Group filed to release a localised six-seater version of the GLC, a move designed to compete with popular domestic family sport utility vehicles like those from Li Auto.

In the premium SUV market, Zeekr has followed up the success of its flagship 9X with the slightly smaller but tech-laden 8X, while the Saic Motor-Volkswagen joint venture is moving forward with the ID Era 9X.

Even Zhejiang Leapmotor Technology, traditionally known for budget-friendly models, is entering the luxury fray with the D19. Models typically reach the market as soon as within weeks of appearing in MIIT filings. BLOOMBERG
