[SHANGHAI] Chinese privately-run carrier Juneyao Airlines said on Monday it will join global alliance group Star Alliance in 2017, giving the company a springboard for planned international expansion as more Chinese tourists travel abroad.

Juneyao, which first flew in 2006 and is now one of the country's largest private carriers, will join as a connecting partner, rather than as a full member, with the world's largest airline alliance group, which currently includes Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa and Air China , the firm said at an event in Shanghai.

The Shanghai-based company currently only operates routes to neighbouring countries such as Japan, South Korea and Thailand, but is eyeing more long-haul, intercontinental routes.
