    HE IS one of the most powerful people in New York City, overseeing the region's sprawling network of subways, buses and railroads. But many riders might not recognise the man largely responsible for whether they get to work on time.

    For nearly four years, through storms, train crashes and fare increases, that man, Thomas F Prendergast, has been the chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). With his unassuming style, he has received broad praise from elected officials and transit advocates.
