EX-AUDI chief executive officer Rupert Stadler pleaded guilty to “dieselgate” fraud charges at his Munich trial on Tuesday (May 16), becoming the highest-ranking former executive to make a confession in the emissions cheating scandal that rocked parent company Volkswagen.

After learning of the scam in 2015, Stadler “neglected to inform business partners... thereby accepting that vehicles equipped with the illegal software would go on sale”, the court heard in a statement read out by defence lawyer Ulrike Thole-Groll.

The confession comes as part of a plea deal that will see Stadler escape jail time. AFP
