YOU would need to be at the least as old as this columnist and to have been working in shipping in Singapore to remember the time when Esben Poulsson took up his first position here - and the man has just marked 50 years in the shipping industry in East Asia and Singapore.
Mr Poulsson left his native Denmark at 17, and has since become part of the Singapore business community. He chairs Enesel, which runs a container-vessel fleet under the Singapore flag. He also sits on the board of the Maritime Port Authority and was president of the Singapore Shipping Association for five years; in 2016, he became chair of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), which represents 80 per cent of global shipping.
His dedication to Singapore earned him National Day honours in 2019 - the Bintang Bakti Masyarakat, for his service to the maritime industry.
