THIS week's Singapore Maritime Week 2015 is certainly providing lots of food for thought, to the extent it is difficult to know what to focus on. However, the theme of global cooperation was a prominent one on Monday.
To take the most controversial issue first, chairman of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), Masamichi Morooka, warned about the dangers of regional maritime regulation being adopted by governments at variance with the global maritime conventions adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
"Global rules for a global shipping industry is not just a slogan," Mr Morooka told members of the Singapore Shipping Association before criticising the approaches to the regulation of shipping being pursued by the US and the European Union (EU).
