Advanced air mobility (AAM) has generated a lot of excitement of late. Over the last year, at least 5 original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) went public, including Eve Air Mobility, Joby Aviation, Lilium, Vertical Aerospace and Archer Aviation. In Singapore, AAM featured heavily at both the Singapore Airshow in February and the Singapore Maritime Week in April.
Undoubtedly, AAM is making headlines on a regular basis as the industry continues to pick up pace and interest. However, the futuristic air taxis that have captured our imaginations cannot operate in silo. They are in urgent need of ground infrastructure, a rigorously tested regulatory framework, as well as a supportive industry ecosystem to meet their full potential.
AAM is a transport revolution in the making, and the term “vertiport” is fast becoming a key part of the vernacular. The AAM industry is standing where the Wright brothers were more than a century ago. And just like those early pioneers of air travel – and all forms of transport that came before and after – the AAM industry will require ground infrastructure too.
