THE head of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) said on Monday the shipping industry is on track to achieve 30 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions per vessel by 2030, but warned an overall emission cap on the industry would compromise the contribution shipping can make to the world economy.
Instead of a limit on overall emissions from the shipping sector, which is expected to expand along with world trade, "30 per cent reduction per vessel in 2030" would be more "realistic", IMO secretary-general Koji Sekimizu told delegates at the Future-Ready Shipping 2015 conference being co-hosted by the IMO and the Maritime Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).
