Lack of safety culture a cause of disasters
Improving ferry safety does not necessarily mean huge expense, research shows that more than 90% of the accidents and deaths are directly attributable to human error
FERRY safety, or the lack of it at times, is an important issue in this region. It is also one that has been pursued energetically by the global ferry industry trade association Interferry.
In October this year Interferry will be holding its 41st annual conference in Manila, with safety issues high on the agenda.
International Maritime Organization secretary-general Kitack Lim is to make the keynote opening address marking a decade of cooperation between the two organisations to help improve domestic ferry safety in developing nations.
