New Chartered Engineer accreditation for railway professionals

RAIL engineers can now attain the Chartered Engineers (CEng) professional accreditation, after railway and transportation engineering was introduced as the latest discipline under the CEng programme by the Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) on Friday.

To launch the CEng programme for railway professionals, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed by IES, the Land Transport Authority (LTA), the Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA), SBS Transit, and SMRT Corporation. Application for the accreditation will start at the end of the year.

SMRT and SBS Transit will separately support their rail engineers to become chartered. SMRT said it will likely sponsor the accreditation fees, and SBS Transit will grant its engineers study leave and also sponsor related fees.

In addition, the MOU will also establish a common set of railway engineering industry standards for engineering competencies.

The move comes amid a growing demand for rail engineers, as Singapore's rail network is set to double by 2030.
