IT is probably safe to say that most of this column's readers have some connection with the maritime industry. And Singapore has more of its population employed in businesses connected directly to shipping than any other country that comes to mind.
Even so, most readers will probably agree that the matters connected with shipping and the sea are not normally of great concern to the general population - except briefly when something goes dramatically wrong.
As for shipping's Cinderella sub-sector of bunkering, vital as it is to Singapore's economy, it carries on more or less out of sight and mind of the rest of society. So the news that the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is moving into the final stages of nailing down the latest edition of International Standard 8217 on bunker quality is not likely to send ripples of excitement throughout the populace.
