Phishing scams on Facebook using SIA logo to sell cheap suitcases, police warn

THE logo of national carrier Singapore Airlines (SIA) has been used in a new phishing scam in Facebook advertisements that tout suitcases for S$2, the police warned on Thursday (Dec 7).
These fake advertisements or posts, purportedly by “Singapore Airlines Travel”, feature the SIA logo as their profile picture.
Fourteen victims have lost at least S$799 in total. They had clicked on the fake advertisements, intending to buy the suitcase, but were instead directed to a phishing website and asked for their credentials, such as their name and credit card details.
The victims realised that they had been scammed only when they discovered or were notified about unauthorised transactions on their cards.
SIA is aware of the Facebook account in the name of “Singapore Airlines Travel” that was impersonating the airline and the fake advertisements, a spokesperson from the carrier said in response to queries from The Business Times.
The fake Facebook page has already been removed, the spokesman added.
The airline posted an advisory on Thursday evening on its Facebook account to inform the public about it.
SIA shares rose 1.4 per cent to S$6.34 on Thursday.
