SEAFARING can, by its very nature, be a dangerous occupation. The sea can be unforgiving when mistakes are made or ships are not really up to the conditions they face.
In general, working on merchant fleets is safer now than it was a few decades ago. However, recent events have highlighted that seafarers can also find themselves at risk because of political disputes, verging on warlike actions and piracy.
It is well-known that the crews of two tankers, Grace 1 and Stena Impero were detained in July when their ships were seized in an escalating political dispute.
