Shipping is getting safer but risks are growing

Published Tue, Aug 17, 2021 · 09:50 PM

ABOUT a fortnight ago, the container ship Ever Given completed discharging its cargo at North European ports. There was the unusual sight of a huge container ship leaving Felixstowe with no containers on deck and obviously in light ship condition and presumably heading for a shipyard.

The very large vessel's recent accident in the Suez Canal brought home to the general public how dependent they are on shipping and how things can go wrong.

In fact, however, shipping losses remain at historic lows according to Safety & Shipping Review 2021, published by major marine insurance company Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty (AGCS). It does though warn that "Covid, mega-ship, supply chain and climate challenges loom large".
