IMPROVED operational safety and optimised usage of resources are some of the key benefits that can be accrued from investing in research and technology within the shipping industry, panellists at a shipping seminar said on Tuesday.
At the seminar - organised by the Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI) in conjunction with the Singapore Maritime Week - senior shipping executives and researchers convened to discuss the need for advanced digital competencies, in a bid to provide ballast for the beleaguered shipping industry which is struggling to stay afloat amid a global slump.
