Training ships, cadets at 16 should make a comeback

Deck officers ought to become instinctive seamen by the time they are watch officers, so training should not be tailored too much to the electronic age

TRAINING acts not only as a career enhancer, but also plays an essential role in the modernisation of the shipping industry as a whole. That was the message Esben Poulsson, chairman of International Chamber of Shipping delivered in his keynote speech at this year's CrewConnect Global Conference in Manila.

Mr Poulsson, who is also president of the Singapore Shipping Association, said: "The future sustainability of the industry requires an evolutionary response to the training and retention of seafarers. We need to do more than simply respond to changing needs, we must learn to anticipate them and thereby control the development of the industry."

He pointed out that in an uncertain time for the global economy and world trade, and therefore the shipping industry, structural change will follow and that operations and trading patterns will also change.
