IN the shipping industry, the motto "our word is our bond" immediately brings to mind the Baltic Exchange. It stems from the time when charters were agreed with a handshake on the trading floor. But it still conveys the message of a commitment to honesty and integrity.
The independent tanker owners seem to have had something similar in mind at the recent meeting in New York of Intertanko (International Association of Independent Tanker Owners).
According to an Intertanko statement, "to demonstrate Members' commitment to Intertanko's Tanker Industry Voluntary Code of Conduct and their commitment to best practice in general, the vast majority of council members endorsed the Code of Conduct during their recent meeting in New York by publicly signing it on a large banner".
