UNILEVER has edged out OCBC Bank as the best company to work for in Singapore in 2022, in a ranking compiled by professional networking site LinkedIn.

The consumer goods company rose 2 places from last year's ranking, given its various upskilling schemes and flexible work arrangements, said LinkedIn.

Standard Chartered Bank came in second, maintaining its position from the year before, and insurer Prudential made it to the third place, a jump from its 14th position in last year's ranking.

This is the second year LinkedIn is ranking the top 15 companies to work for in Singapore. Data across 7 pillars were used: ability to advance, skills growth, company stability, external opportunity, company affinity, gender diversity and spread of educational backgrounds.

LinkedIn said in a statement on Wednesday (Apr 6) that flexible work arrangements, as well as upskilling opportunities were key trends that featured in this year's rankings.

LinkedIn's data indicated that there were 2.3 times more job postings offering remote work in Singapore compared to a year ago, and that 1.35 times more applications were received.

Unilever instituted a permanent hybrid working arrangement and redesigned its office space to include quiet zones with height-adjustable desks and open collaboration. DBS, whose placing jumped from 15th to 5th this year, has allowed its staff to work remotely up to 40 per cent of the time.

As for upskilling opportunities, Standard Chartered invested S$5 million in a global learning hub to train its 8,000 employees in 2022; Prudential is working with Ngee Ann Polytechnic to provide its staff opportunities to learn digital skill sets such as machine learning.

OCBC Bank, which fell from the top of the list to the 4th place, has accelerated its "Future Smart" programme to focus on digitalisation for its employees.

LinkedIn News' senior managing editor Satoshi Ebitani said that employee engagement and support is more important than ever.

"Our Top Companies list celebrates companies who are invested in the growth and well-being of the most important resource in the workplace - their people," he said.

Two technology companies - Alphabet and Grab - made their debut in this year's rankings, but financial services companies still dominated the rankings in Singapore, accounting for 6 out of the top 15.
