UOB to launch gig employment model for retired employees

UOB'S retired employees can soon choose to return to work on a flexible basis in a new gig employment model to be launched next year, the bank announced on Friday (Nov 5).
For a start, short-term and project-based opportunities will be opened up to retirees in areas "where deep technical expertise and extensive experience are highly valued such as customer service, process and systems training, operations and project advisory".
UOB will also test the feasibility of opening this flexible gig employment model to more people in the future.
To address concerns associated with gig work, the bank will offer healthcare benefits and insurance coverage for such roles, and have a "seamless and simplified performance management process".
A recent UOB staff survey found that four-fifths of employees would consider some form of work after retirement, with a preference for a flexible work scheme.
Ahead of the launch next year, an initial pilot was conducted, with its findings to be used to refine the model.

Said UOB deputy chairman and chief executive officer Wee Ee Cheong: "Besides creating flexible opportunities for our retirees to stay active and for the bank to tap valuable skills and experience, it is also helping to create a vibrant society in Singapore where contribution and connection is not limited by age."
The announcement was made on the last day of UOB's annual #Better Future of Work Festival, which also featured new office designs with more communal spaces.
At the festival, guest of honour Manpower Minister and Second Minister for Trade of Industry Tan See Leng officially launched UOB's new employee clubhouse at 28 Boat Quay, together with Wee.
