US: S&P 500 opens at record high on retail sales data, chip stocks boost

    WALL Street’s main indexes jumped on Thursday (Oct 17), with the S&P 500 notching up a record high as an upbeat forecast from TSMC boosted semiconductor stocks, while a bigger-than-expected rise in September retail sales pointed to a strong US consumer.

    The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 165.37 points, or 0.38 per cent, to 43,243.07.

    The S&P 500 rose 33.1 points, or 0.57 per cent, at the open to 5,875.62​, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 170.1 points, or 0.93 per cent, to 18,537.212 at the opening bell. REUTERS
