ACTIVITY in local stocks ground to a virtual halt on Tuesday, with the Straits Times Index hardly budging throughout the session before ending a nett 5.41 points higher at 2,814.65 on volume of 978.7 million units worth S$664 million, the lowest single-day total this year.
Overseas markets did not provide much direction - the Dow futures, which was marginally in the red for almost the entire day, stood 15 points higher at 5pm. Under such trying conditions, it was not surprising that brokers struggled to stay awake - those that did had to be content with punting small caps and second-liners.
As a result, all the top 20 actives were priced below S$1 and 16 were below S$0.20. The average value per unit traded was S$0.67.
