Poulet boleh for kampong chickens in Singapore

CHICKENS can still cross the road into Singapore as farms which produce the more expensive kampong and organic poultry say that they will continue to maintain supplies even when Malaysia’s export ban takes effect on Jun 1.

According to Scott Ang, spokesman of Aqina Farm which specialises in organic kampong as well as regular chickens fed with pineapple enzymes, there are 2 main types of poultry that come fresh into Singapore each day - the mass market ‘broiler’ chickens, and kampong chickens which are raised in bigger spaces with better feed and cost more. The ban affects mainly the broilers which are higher in demand in Malaysia because of their easier accessibility. 

“We had virtual meetings with the relevant authorities in Malaysia and it was confirmed that kampong and organic chickens have been given special approval for export since there’s a higher local demand for broiler chicken,” said Ang. “Because the objective of the ban is to ensure an adequate supply of chicken to Malaysians at an accessible price.”
