SLNG, Linde in tie-up for carbon dioxide liquefaction, storage facility

SINGAPORE LNG Corporation (SLNG) and Linde Gas Singapore are jointly exploring the feasibility and development of a carbon dioxide (CO2) liquefaction and storage facility to be located adjacent to the SLNG Terminal on Jurong Island.

If feasible, the facility will be the first of its kind in Singapore and the region, both parties said in a joint statement on Monday (Nov 29). They added that the project will liquefy, store and transport CO2 for the project partners and potentially be scaled up in the future to handle CO2 from more sources.

SLNG and Linde Gas Singapore have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the project - which involves using cold energy from the SLNG Terminal's operations to liquefy CO2. The liquified CO2 will be stored in tanks onsite and later transported for end use.

SLNG chief executive Tan Soo Koong said the project will allow SLNG to realise its cold energy recovery objectives with a two-fold benefit -- cold energy recovery with high efficiency, as well as effective liquefaction and storage to reduce CO2 emissions.

Linde Asia-Pacific head of clean hydrogen and decarbonisation Qian Wen Bin noted: "We believe that the application of Linde's knowledge and experience in carbon capture, liquefaction, and storage together with SLNG's cold energy capability will be a key innovative and efficient enabler for Singapore's decarbonisation plans."
