SURBANA Jurong has joined Sun Cable's A$30 billion (S$30.1 billion) Australia-Asia PowerLink project (AA PowerLink), among partners such as engineering companies Bechtel and Hatch.

SMEC, a Surbana Jurong member company specialising in solar generation has joined the project as well. (see amendment note)

The project is aiming to deliver electricity from solar farms in the Northern Territory, Australia to Darwin and Singapore. The AA PowerLink will see the solar farms generate an estimated 17 to 20 gigawatt-peak to a 36 to 42 gigawatt-hour battery and deliver electricity via an undersea cable about 4,200 km long.

"We are confident that the Sun Cable project development partnership will make significant contributions to uplift the level of renewable energy consulting and climate engineering expertise in the region," said Wong Heang Fine, group chief executive officer (CEO), Surbana Jurong.

Surbana Jurong will help facilitate the regulatory approvals for the project's integration into the Singapore grid and technical services in the infrastructure needed for landing the power in Singapore. SMEC will be delivering services around solar generation and facilitating grid connections in Australia.

The AA PowerLink will also see a battery being built and utilised in storing electricity for use in Singapore. The project is expected to begin construction from late 2023, with electricity first flowing to Darwin in 2026 and Singapore in 2027 with full capacity by end-2028.

Surbana Jurong and Sun Cable will also cooperate on a series of talent development initiatives. Sustainability-themed webinars with a focus on renewable energy will be organised by the SJ Global Academy, Surbana Jurong's learning and development arm.

"This project is designed to significantly accelerate the carbon zero ambitions of the region and we have brought together a dream team to bring it to fruition," said Sun Cable CEO David Griffin.
