THE US wants US$16 billion to US$18 billion in water-pollution fines from BP Plc's exploration unit, and more than US$1 billion from partner Anadarko Petroleum Corp, as co-owners of the blown-out well that caused the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
The federal government said that BP deserves the maximum fine for unleashing the worst offshore spill in US history.
