THEY hoped to raise awareness for civet cats that are exploited by humans to produce Kopi Luwak, the most expensive coffee in the world, and an otter that is in captivity.

That was the aim of children aged 5-12 years old, who translated their messages into paintings.

Together with celebrities such as Foo Fang Rong and Paul Foster, a group of about 60 children produced more than 50 art pieces. While all artworks are up for auction online, 20 selected pieces will be specially curated to go on a live-auction event on May 28.

The project, titled “Caring For Our Future Together”, is a collaboration between Canvass Mindfulness Centre and Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (Acres). The goal is to raise up to S$10,000 and net proceeds will go to Acres in support of their wildlife conservation work.

Jolie Michelle Ow, the founder and director of Canvass, said: “Each artwork features a message to save wildlife in Singapore, that animals like us have feelings, and how we can take care of them and our planet. The charity campaign, besides raising awareness and funds, is created to rebuild connections, strengthen inner values and bring a lot more warmth to these challenging times.”

Sunavya Sud, who is 11, said of her creation The Horse Clock: “This painting shows that everyone has a different perspective on life, even animals and horses. The clock represents that you have a short time to do what you want, so you should do whatever you feel is right for you and not regret it.”

TV presenter Claire Jedrek, who was involved in organising the event, said: “Not everyone is exposed to animal welfare in Singapore and we’re aiming for a small social ripple which will hopefully create a bigger wave of awareness through our well known influencers. What’s quite heartening to know, is the younger kids have picked up creating their own social causes using their art for donations.”

All artworks were showcased at an exhibition in the month of March at Chef Suzette.
