THE Special Olympics movement in Singapore has received a S$60,000 cheque from Procter & Gamble (P&G) and NTUC FairPrice, which will help further its mission to provide sports training and opportunities for athletic competition to children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

The two companies have aided Special Olympics in another way: They recently handed out 350 goodie bags to the mothers of Special Olympics athletes as a tribute to these women for giving emotional and logistical support to their children's participation in sport. Their involvement in the annual "Thank You, Mom" campaign started in 2012.

Shankar Viswanathan, P&G's vice-president for Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam, said: "This past year has not been an easy time for everyone, and we hope that our token of appreciation for them this year will... give our athletes the motivation, perseverance and energy to overcome the odds."

Group chief executive officer for the FairPrice Group Seah Kian Peng said that with Covid-19 having changed mothers' roles in the past year, in that they have to juggle work and caregiving, "we would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to them for the work they do".
