A total of S$1.3 million was raised at the Singapore Island Country Club's (SICC) May Day charity event last Saturday, with the Golden Jubilee celebration of the charity drive helping 13 beneficiaries across various causes such as for health, the community, disabled, children and elderly.

More than 700 golfers took part in the tournament, competing for hole-in-one car prizes on the club's three-and-a-half golf courses.

The charity's patron, President Halimah Yacob, hailed SICC's continuous commitment to this fundraising initiative, praising the club's efforts for helping spread kindness and cheer to those in need, especially during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

"I would like to thank SICC, all donors, sponsors and everyone who have contributed for their generosity and support for SICC May Day Charity 2021," she said in a press release.

Vincent Wee, SICC club captain and organising chairman of the May Day Charity, reflected on the progress of the event over the last half-a-century, which started out as a group of golfers raising funds through golf games for the underprivileged.

The charity event has since raised more than S$22 million to support social service programmes, benefiting many people in underprivileged groups.

Besides the charity golf tournament and corporate sponsorships, other fringe activities by SICC's food & beverage, lifestyle and sports fraternities are taking place throughout the month of May.

Commemorative items such as reusable face masks and T-shirts are on sale to all members and the public. The Island Driving Range was open to members of the public for a look into the only members' club in Singapore.

A walk-a-jog event to be held on Sime Course aims at giving members and their guests an opportunity to commemorate the 18-hole golf course before its land lease expires.
