NCCS launches public consultation on Singapore’s decarbonisation
Interested parties’ views will be taken into consideration as the country develops its next tranche of climate targets, measures and policies
THE National Climate Change Secretariat (NCCS) announced its launch of a public consultation to gather views on Singapore’s decarbonisation journey on Tuesday (Oct 8).
NCCS said Singapore must make progress in three key transition areas to achieve its climate targets. These include a carbon transition to reduce emissions across all sectors, an energy transition to achieve a resilient net-zero electricity grid, and an economic transition to remain competitive in a low-carbon future and capture new green growth opportunities.
As these transitions will bring opportunities and trade-offs, companies will have to rethink their value chains and pursue less carbon-intensive growth areas. Workers will also have to acquire new skills to stay relevant.
NCCS welcomes interested parties to weigh in on issues pertaining to Singapore’s decarbonisation – such as Singapore’s net-zero emissions by 2050 target, its transition towards a low-carbon economy, and decarbonisation methods.
These views will be taken into consideration as Singapore develops its next tranche of climate targets, measures and policies.
In 2020, Singapore submitted its enhanced 2030 Nationally Determined Contribution and Long-Term Low Emissions Development Strategy.

It also held a previous round of public consultations in 2022, and subsequently raised its climate targets to cut emissions to around 60 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2030 and to achieve net zero by 2050.
Singapore will submit its next Nationally Determined Contribution in early 2025.
As decarbonisation is a nationwide effort that requires everyone to play their part, individuals must alter their personal habits, said NCCS.
This includes consuming and wasting less, reducing energy consumption at home by using energy-efficient appliances and less air-conditioning, and by switching to cleaner modes of transportation.
The consultation exercise will end on Nov 5.
