Twenty seniors from Care Corner Singapore were out and about on a Tuesday (May 24) morning as passengers in 4-wheeler bikes.
They were taken around Singapore Sports Hub by staff volunteers from OCBC Bank, in the first group outing for the seniors since the pandemic. The initiative is an extension of the annual mass-cycling OCBC Cycle event, which started in 2015.
Koh Ching Ching, head of Group Brand and Communications, OCBC Bank, said: “We started teaching underprivileged kids and youths how to cycle in 2015, as a way to give back to society while letting the young ones have the opportunity to learn a lifelong skill and enjoy the thrill of cycling. Our volunteers have guided more than 100 kids and youths since then. Engaging the community has always been essential to us, whether through large-scale events like OCBC Cycle or through simpler yet meaningful initiatives like bringing the elderly out for fresh air with our friendly volunteers on 4-wheeler rides.”
Daniel Chien, Senior Director for Care Corner Seniors Services Ltd, said: “Outings are another mode of active ageing programmes that we will be doing more of given the relaxation of the pandemic’s safe distancing measures. As we age, we may not travel far and beyond our daily routine and organised outings become a platform for seniors to travel around safely while enjoying themselves and to socialise with friends and volunteers.”
