MENTORS from the private sector and students of Shatec started engaging each other from the first week of March under the latter's rebranded Mentoring@SHATEC programme.

This comes a week after Shatec launched its 13th cycle of mentorship programme with a new look.

Over 70 mentors representing more than 30 organisations in hospitality and culinary, which include Pan Pacific Hotel Group (PPHG), Carlton Hotel and Les Amis Holdings, convened with 20 students at Carlton Hotel.

Established in 2015, the programme lasts for a year and amid the pandemic, its modules have been updated to keep up with the times to include corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability.

Wee Wei Ling, executive director at PPHG, said: "This time, we are including more events and activities to support mentee learning throughout the year. A key focus area in the programme will be sustainability and CSR, so the mentees not only get advice on their careers but also a better sense of how they can contribute back to the community and environment as they enter the industry."

"Given the increasing corporate focus on sustainability and communities, we thought that it was timely to refresh both the brand and the programme, so our students can expand their worldviews," added Wee, who is also the co-chair of the mentoring programme.

Some of the potential engagements include on-site tours to showcase how sustainability can be integrated into the hotel experience and panel discussions on community engagement activities, among others.

Margaret Heng, chief executive of Shatec, said: "Industry mentorship is a key cornerstone of Shatec's strategies in nurturing our young talents. To date, more than 70 industry experts and professional practitioners have come onboard our mentorship panel, pro bono, to impart valuable knowledge and experience in grooming the next generation of hospitality leaders. To our mentors, this serves as a way to give back and is an important personal development and learning experience for them as well."
