Singapore’s EMA to study potential of deploying geothermal energy
It is part of efforts to strengthen the Republic’s energy resilience and decarbonise the power sector
[SINGAPORE] The Energy Market Authority (EMA) is commissioning a study to assess whether it is possible to deploy geothermal energy in the city-state.
The request for the proposal, which was issued on Tuesday (Apr 28), builds on an ongoing nationwide geophysical survey EMA conducted in 2024 to identify areas in Singapore where there might be geothermal energy.
“Together, the nationwide geophysical survey and feasibility study aim to provide a robust and holistic evaluation of Singapore’s geothermal energy potential. This will provide the government with a basis to decide on the next steps in the pursuit of geothermal energy systems in Singapore,” said EMA in a media statement on the same day.
The study of geothermal energy is part of EMA’s efforts to pursue pathways that can strengthen Singapore’s energy resilience and decarbonise the country’s power sector.
Singapore has set a target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, with the power sector, which contributes about 40 per cent of the country’s total emissions, also having the same target.
The urgency to decarbonise, however, has taken on an additional layer with energy security concerns arising out of the Iran war.

While Singapore does not have conventional geothermal energy resources, recent global advances in geothermal technologies have created new opportunities to harness sub-surface heat for power, heating and cooling needs, said EMA.
“The feasibility study will thus assess the technical, environmental and commercial feasibility of deploying next-generation geothermal systems in Singapore. The appointed consultant will also be tasked to identify areas for further study and propose policy frameworks for potential geothermal projects,” read the statement.
EMA is expected to appoint the consultant for the feasibility study within 2026. The duration of the study will depend on the proposal submitted by the appointed consultant, as well as the scope and complexity of work required, it added.
