TOSHIBA Mitsubishi-Electric Industrial Systems Corporation (TMEIC) was established in 2003 from the integration of Toshiba Corporation and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation's industrial systems divisions. Since then, the Japanese tech giant has been leveraging the inherited technologies and business foundations from both companies to maximise synergies in core competency areas such as industrial systems, power electronics equipment and rotating machinery.

In addition, TMEIC is expanding its business scope through ventures into renewable energy and the strengthening of its global operations. In recent years, it has been accelerating efforts toward achieving carbon neutrality. These initiatives have led to the growth of TMEIC's current global sales from an initial scale of $1.7 billion at the time of establishment to $3 billion.

TMEIC Asia was established as a Singapore branch in 2009 and later became the company's regional headquarters for South-east Asia in September 2015. The year 2023 marks its eighth year of operation. During this period, TMEIC Asia established subsidiaries in Indonesia and Thailand, as well as two liaison offices in Vietnam, to provide its proprietary products, engineering and services to clients across the South-east Asian region.

Since its predecessor's days with Toshiba and Mitsubishi Electric, TMEIC has been supplying products to a wide range of industrial users in South-east Asia, including Japanese companies. For instance, it has been providing substation equipment, rotating machinery, power electronics and control systems to clients across the region. Notable instances include customers in Singapore's petrochemical sector on Jurong Island, where a petrochemical complex is situated; chemical manufacturers and customers in the paper industry in Indonesia; and clients in Thailand's steel and general industries.

Over the years, TMEIC has expanded its offerings beyond conventional products to help customers better meet the needs of an evolving market while achieving their environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) goals. In particular, in the Vietnamese market, it is supplying photovoltaic (PV) inverters to solar power plants, and has built a responsive infrastructure for maintenance and after-sales service, leveraging its legacy to effectively serve customer needs and provide value-added products and services.

Kenichi Kato, president of TMEIC Asia, believes that by deepening the company's activities in South-east Asia and expanding its offerings, it will be able to help customers grow and transform.

On the current state and outlook of TMEIC's business in South-east Asia, TMEIC Asia's president Kenichi Kato says: "TMEIC Asia currently focuses on supplying electrical equipment to the manufacturing industry, primarily in the four countries where we have established our presence, thereby contributing to the growth of industrial businesses in the South-east Asia region.

"Moving forward, we will drive the advancement of our customers' transformative growth toward achieving a carbon-neutral society. Manufacturing industry customers are also expected to be actively committed to responding to changes in market needs and society," he adds.

TMEIC Asia strives to deepen its activities in the region and to further expand its domains to better understand the electrical equipment and solutions its customers need for their growth. "This will enable us to provide proposals that truly meet their needs," says Kato.

Akira Kawaguchi, president of TMEIC, sees growth potential in the South-east Asia region.

TMEIC president Akira Kawaguchi, who is driving the acceleration of the TMEIC Group's global business, shares that as part of the TMEIC Group's corporate philosophy, the company aims to build relationships of trust with customers and contribute to the sustainable development of a global society as an industrial systems integrator.

"South-east Asia is a region with approximately 600 million people across 10 countries. This is a promising region where population growth is expected to be accompanied by economic growth of over 5 per cent. TMEIC has manufacturing bases in Japan, the US, China and India, which allows the company to take advantage of numerous business opportunities and options across various regions.

"In the future, we believe that we can contribute to the significant challenge of achieving carbon neutrality by maximising our strengths. In addition to our traditional product and service offerings, we are actively advancing initiatives such as the construction of a hydrogen supply chain. This includes key components such as high-performance rectifiers, explosion-proof and high-speed motors for compressors and pumps, plant energy control equipment and transformers."

Kawaguchi adds: "We are also engaged in systems for ensuring a stable green energy supply, such as photovoltaic power conditioning systems (PV-PCS) for solar power generation and battery energy storage systems, as well as power stabilisation devices for instantaneous low-voltage and blackout countermeasures, such as uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and multiple power compensate (MPC) systems.

"TMEIC operations around the world collaborate to provide customers with corporate value as ONE TMEIC. In each region, we see the practice of diversity management as a platform to flexibly address the unique challenges of industrial users, striving earnestly to enhance the corporate value of each customer."
