STANDARD Chartered Singapore Marathon (SCSM) organiser The Ironman Group has donated S$50,000 to a programme supporting the development of local athletes.
The funds will go to the Singapore Athletic Association’s (SAA) One Team Singapore Fund (OTSF), which supports the development of local athletes and local elite programmes, SCSM said in a statement on Sunday (Dec 4).
Donations made towards the OTSF fund will be matched by Sports SG, meaning that SAA will receive a total of S$100,000 with SCSM’s donation.
Contributions to the fund will go towards supporting Team Singapore athletes, including strengthening the high-performance sport ecosystem.
“We see SCSM as a catalyst in growing our local running community and recognise that we have a part to play in the development of our local athletes,” said Santoz Kumar, The Ironman Group’s Singapore general manager.
He hopes that the donation can help to support the development of the youth athletics programme, local elite support programmes and athletics grassroots programmes.
SAA president Lien Choong Luen said the donation will allow for additional support in “enhancing athletes daily training environment in areas such as athlete and coach development, pathway development opportunities, sport science and management, as well as increasing competition opportunities”.
He added: “More importantly, this fund allows for additional strong, constant support to the athletes for them to achieve their best.”
