CAPITAL flowed out of environmental, social and governance (ESG) funds in South-east Asia in the first quarter of 2023, with net outflows of US$131.5 million reversing a year-ago net inflow of US$21.3 million.
The opposite took place for non-ESG funds domiciled in the region, which saw net inflows grow to US$5.4 billion from net outflows of US$2.4 billion over the same period, according to data provided by financial services company Morningstar.
While the net flows in ESG funds domiciled in South-east Asia declined, quarterly returns for ESG funds improved with an average return of 4.2 per cent, compared with -6.9 per cent a year ago.
