Nominations for Sustainability Impact Awards to close May 15

NOMINATIONS for the Sustainability Impact Awards, jointly presented by The Business Times and UOB, will close on May 15.

The awards, in their second year, recognise businesses and individuals in Singapore striving to make an impact on the environment.

There are three main categories for the awards; large enterprises, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and individuals.

The nomination for the Sustainability Impact Awards comes as many organisations are preparing their sustainability reports, said BT editor Chen Huifen.

“Some of the information required in the awards nomination forms could be extracted from these sustainability reports. It’s a chance to kill two birds with one stone,” she said.

Everyone has a part to play in moving towards a sustainable future, added Eric Lim, chief sustainability officer at UOB. A recent UOB SME study showed that three-quarters of Singapore businesses view sustainability as important.

“We are pleased to continue working with BT on the Sustainability Impact Awards to celebrate the contributions of businesses and individuals who have created positive environmental or social impact. We hope to inspire more to do the same, so that both people and the planet can progress together in harmony,” said Lim.

The judging panel this year will be led by Lee Chuan Seng, chairman of the National Environmental Agency. The other members are:

  • Chen Huifen, BT editor;
  • Lawrence Loh, director of the Centre for Governance and Sustainability at NUS Business School;
  • Tan Swee Yiow, president of the Real Estate Developers’ Association of Singapore;
  • Geoffrey Yeo, assistant CEO, urban solutions, sustainability and enterprise finance, at Enterprise Singapore;
  • Michael Tang, head of listing policy and product admission at Singapore Exchange Regulation; and
  • Theresa Goh, managing founder of coaching services provider 360 Dynamics.

Last year’s winners in the large enterprise category were telco Singtel, real estate groups CapitaLand and City Developments, and energy infrastructure provider Engie South East Asia.

Food and beverage chain The Social Kitchen, cooling systems provider Kaer, mental health charity Mindset, and cleaning company Speco Singapore were the winners in the SME category.

Preston Wong, co-founder of food waste startup treatsure; and Clarence Chua, founder of The Sundowner bee rescue initiative, which offers nature-based workshops and activities, won in the individual category.
