NOMINATIONS are now open for this year’s Sustainability Impact Awards, which recognise individuals and businesses that have made a significant positive impact on the environment through sustainability initiatives.

This third edition of the annual awards is jointly presented by The Business Times and UOB. The Centre for Governance and Sustainability (CGS) at the National University of Singapore Business School is the knowledge partner.

Nominations for this year’s awards close on May 16.

BT editor Chen Huifen sees individuals and corporates in Singapore being more conscious of sustainability issues.

“We want to highlight those who are dedicating themselves to advancing responsible capitalism, and doing so in deliberate and thoughtful ways that others can learn from,” she said.

UOB’s chief sustainability officer Eric Lim said that sustainability is about making “transformational and impactful change”.

“To tackle the urgent challenges facing our planet and society, we need the collective action from every member of the community – businesses and individuals alike,” he added.

There are three main categories for the awards: large enterprises, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and individuals.

Last year’s winners included companies that were incorporating sustainability into their business practices long before doing so became popular.

The 2024 winners in the large enterprise category were real estate company City Developments Limited (CDL), asset manager Keppel, and statutory board Sentosa Development Corporation. The joint submission of property developer UOL Group and its member company Pan Pacific Hotels Group also received the award.

Those recognised in the SME category were urban farms BlueAcres and Edible Garden City, non-profit organisation Ground-Up Initiative, as well as waste management and environmental restoration company Seven Clean Seas.

In the individual category, the winner was CDL’s chief sustainability officer Esther An, who was recognised for shaping national regulations for climate-related disclosures. Other winners include GuocoLand chief executive officer Cheng Hsing Yao and SBS Transit group CEO Jeffrey Sim.

Lawrence Loh, director of the CGS at NUS Business School, said that in a dynamic business landscape, companies and leaders still have many reasons to remain steadfast in sustainability.

“It is vital that we recognise those who have been steadfast and fostered positive change. Through our work in assessing sustainability standards, we hope to amplify the sustainability cause and encourage more to take action for a greener future,” he said.
