Top listcos, executives shine at 18th Singapore Corporate Awards

    PROMINENT listed companies and business leaders were recognised for their work in championing corporate governance at the 18th Singapore Corporate Awards, co-organised by The Business Times, the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants and Singapore Institute of Directors (SID).

    Held on Sep 7 at the Ritz-Carlton Millenia Singapore, this year’s awards honoured 30 companies and six individuals.

    The big winners were CapitaLand Group – which comprises CapitaLand Investment (CLI), CapitaLand Integrated Commercial Trust , CapitaLand India Trust and CapitaLand Ascendas Reit (Clar) – and UOB Group, comprising UOB , United Overseas Insurance and UOL Group . They bagged five accolades each in various categories.

    The gold awards picked up by CapitaLand Group were CLI’s for Best Risk Management under the large-cap category, and Clar’s for Best Annual Report under the real estate investment trusts (Reits) and business trusts category.

    Meanwhile, UOB Group’s gold prizes were both clinched by the bank, for Best Managed Board and Best Investor Relations among large-cap companies.

    For individual awards, Best Chief Executive went to Jardine Cycle & Carriage ’s Benjamin Birks for large-caps; Seah Kiin Peng of BRC Asia for mid-caps; and Jeanette Chang of Baker Technology for small-caps.

    City Developments ’ Yiong Yim Ming, Parag Sachdeva of Del Monte Pacific, and Pan-United Corporation ’s Teh Tiong Jim were recognised as the Best Chief Financial Officers for the large-cap, mid-cap and small-cap categories respectively.

    Minister for Manpower Tan See Leng was the guest of honour. In his speech, he encouraged corporate leaders to strengthen corporate governance in key areas including sustainability and embracing transformation.

    Wong Su-Yen, SCA co-chair and chairperson of SID, said: “Having a strong board of directors, active in helping to transform organisations, is a critical link in the corporate governance process. Board members serve as good conduits – providing strategic direction in an evolving landscape, and ensuring that the company is in compliance with all relevant laws and regulation.”
