Asean businesses can play more active role to set agenda amid US-China dispute

Business leaders in the region urged to press their governments to conclude RCEP negotiations

BUSINESSES can play a more significant role in advocating for reinforced cohesion between Asean members, amid escalating US and China trade tensions which could last for some time, said Trade and Industry Minister Chan Chun Sing on Tuesday.

He also called on business leaders at the Asean Conference to issue a "strong call" to their respective governments to conclude negotiations on the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) early.

"RCEP's conclusion will be a powerful signal of this region's commitment in keeping markets open and integrated," he said.

Indeed, it is in the interest of Asean to continue to uphold and update the World Trade Organisation system, and develop common platforms and standards for the region, said Mr Chan in a dialog…
