THE riverfront promenade at Boat Quay will get a makeover next year with revamped outdoor dining areas and new open spaces, as part of a project by the private sector-led Singapore River One.

The facelift, fully funded by the Urban Redevelopment Authority and estimated to cost S$5 million, will bring a more consistent look along the promenade and improve the ambience for diners and visitors. Electricity to the new outdoor structures will also be provided via underground wires instead of the present low overhanging wires.

Currently, outdoor dining areas at Boat Quay typically have bulky tent structures and high partitions, which obstruct the view of the river and result in a cluttered dining experience. Some of the structures are also not well-maintained by the businesses.

Construction will take place in five phases. Each phase will take about eight weeks, with the first phase likely starting in the first quarter of next year.
