INSTEAD of selling solar-powered lights and chargers to recreational hikers, Third Wave Power decided to change tack in 2017, targeting the electricity-hungry rural population of India.
In under two years, they gained nearly 800,000 customers in India alone, about four times the global customer base it had before that. The company's India operations now account for two-thirds of its total revenue.
