AFTER Singapore became independent 50 years ago, the government sent missions to various African countries to explore new trade and business opportunities.
Things were slow to take off, however, and in Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's words, Singapore was "perhaps ahead of our time" in reaching out to that continent.
